Fujitsu Stylistic M532 review

After Fujitsu's unimpressive tablet debut with the business-focused Stylistic Q550, we weren't holding out much hope for the Japanese company's follow-up, the Fujitsu Stylistic M532. As it turns out, we needn't have worried. Fujitsu has executed a complete U-turn and given us a tablet that can compete with heavyweights such as the Toshiba AT200,Asus Transformer Pad 300 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Although the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 is aimed primarily at business users, Fujitsu has dropped the Windows 7 operating system of the Stylistic Q550 and opted for Android this time around. There could be no other way.

Although Windows 7 offers by far the widest number of business applications, its performance on a tablet compared to Android is like comparing Sunday league football with the Premier League.

Not only is the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 offering Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box, it also has an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor tucked inside running the whole show, 1GB RAM, 32GB SSD storage and an 8MP rear-facing camera.

This device is aimed at taking on the top tier of Android tablets, and the price reflects that. Although the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 has yet to be released, Fujitsu told us to expect a full retail price of £476 (around $745), which puts it competitively among the likes of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Asus Transformer Prime, not to mention the newiPad.

Of course, the real question remains: is it worth it? Well, we've spent some serious time with Fujitsu's new baby in order to find out exactly that.

Features

Fujitsu has opted for a 10.1-inch form factor with the Fujitsu Stylistic M532, and has kept the chassis down to a pleasingly slim 8.6mm (0.34 inches). That's as thick as theSamsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the new iPad - at 9.4mm thick - is portly by comparison.

Luckily, there's no hidden weight anywhere, and the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 tips the scales at only 560g (1.23lbs). In one hand this weight becomes noticeable after a time, but if you're using both it's light as a feather.

The back of the tablet has been given a soft, rubberised plastic coating, similar to the one found on the reverse of the BlackBerry PlayBook. This doesn't look as attractive as the aluminium of the new iPad, or even budget machines such as the Disgo 9104, but we can't argue with the functionality. The rubbery black coating is easy to grip, and you won't find it getting covered with smudgy fingerprints, either. That's just the screen.

There's only so much you can do with the aesthetics of a tablet, but Fujitsu has thrown a little of its trademark red onto the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 by way of a trim around the outside. The jury's out as to whether this cheapens the look of the tablet, but in our opinion it adds a good design touch that helps to differentiate it from the legions of similar devices.

Thanks to Android 4.0's soft key arrangement, there aren't any physical buttons on the front of the Fujitsu Stylistic M532, and this really helps make it look better. The bezel isn't tiny, but then it isn't massive either – just big enough for the Fujitsu branding at the bottom of the tablet and the front-facing 2.0MP camera lens at the top.

In fact, the only buttons you'll find on the entire tablet are the on/off switch on the top of the device and the volume up/down on the right-hand side.

Below the volume controls is the micro USB port and space for a micro SIM card and microSD storage expansion. Yes, that's right – the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 features both 3G connectivity and microSD storage. These are two features often overlooked on the majority of tablets, and the fact that Fujitsu has included them is enough to merit a slow, appreciative nod of the head on our part.

Even without the microSD card, you still get 32GB of SSD storage inside the Fujitsu Stylistic M532, which is generous for the price.

The only other connection, besides the 3.5mm headphone jack, is the Fujitsu proprietary port on the base of the tablet, used for charging and the like. The hope is that, à la Apple, we might see some docking stations and other peripherals that take advantage of this before the year is through.

Given that the screen is about the most important part of any tablet, how does the Fujitsu's hold up to scrutiny? Quite well, as it happens. The 10.1-inch Gorilla Glass display has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and excellent viewing angles. All the .MOV, .AVI and .MKV files we threw at it played perfectly, and we were able to settle down for a couple of hours with several HD episodes of Game of Thrones.

However, as ever, the glossy screen ran into trouble when we watched in bright light. And although the brightness on the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 can be boosted, it wasn't enough for outside viewing.

Even so, you'll get a lot of viewing time from the Fujitsu Stylistic M532. Fujitsu quotes the lithium polymer battery inside the tablet will give you 9.5 hours of usage. We streamed HD video continuously from a full charge until the tablet gave up after 283 minutes.

Given that streaming video is a demanding task, especially with full connectivity and performance settings, you should be able to get longer from this tablet with more conservative use.

The power itself comes courtesy of the aforementioned Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor and the 1GB of RAM that keeps Android 4.0 running smoothly – but more of that on the next page.

Hands on: BlackBerry 10 review

 BlackBerry 10 is still heavily under development and still quite some way from being a finished product, but we've had some hands on time with an early release to get a feel for some of the new features.

Delayed until early 2013, the first BB10 devices should land in January– although the device we used to view the early stages of the operating system was merely just a vessel to deliver the goods and not a final product.

In fact it was the BlackBerry Dev Alpha device which has been handed out in its thousands to BlackBerry developers worldwide, so they can start working away on new apps ready for the launch of BB 10. We checked out an recent version of the device in London, and here's what we thought:

BB10 sees the implementation of a whole new user interface, with RIM doing away with the familiar BlackBerry system we're all used to, in favour of something which resembles the likes of Android and iOS, although with its own unique features.

With BlackBerry 10, RIM has merged homescreens, widgets, app lists and a unified inbox into one slick interface, offering up an easy-to-navigate user experience.

The main homescreen comprises of four widgets, technically mini-applications, which expand to fill the screen when tapped.

Scrolling down and you'll notice that this main display actually holds eight mini apps in total – displayed in order of use, allowing you to jump quickly between your recent applications.

Open up an application which isn't in top spot, or a completely new one from the app list, and when you exit it you'll notice that it now occupies the first, top left spot on the homescreen.

Swiping from left to right will bring you to the app home screen, with 16 apps on the screen at any one time, and you can access more by sliding up and down – the whole thing very similar to Windows Phone's Start Menu UI.

Then there's Cascades, a new navigation system cooked up by RIM especially for BB10, allowing for quick multitasking from within applications.

The example we've seen is in the messaging app - open an email it will display full screen, but drag your finger from left to right and the message will slide with you, revealing the inbox below.

This means if you get a new message in the middle of reading an email, you can check who it's from without having to close the application – similar to the notification bar on Android and also now iOS.

If you were to open an attachment from the email, a PDF document in the case of our demo, pulling to the side to view the cascade will show the app's layers stacked up – a more visual paper trail, if you will.

It's certainly an intuitive feature that we found to work smoothly on the development handset – but it will be interesting to see how this feature is embedded into other applications and if it will have the same pleasing results.

Finally, the last feature which was available for us to play with on this early version of BB 10 was RIM's new full-touchscreen QWERTY keyboard.

BlackBerry handsets are famous for their physical boards and RIM is keen to bring this typing experience to its BB10 touchscreen smartphones with its own offering.

Visually the keyboard looks similar to the stock Android offering, but each row of keys is separated with a silver line – which is supposed to reflect the metal strips between buttons on the Bold range, such as the Bold 9790 andBold 9900.

Next word prediction, auto-correct and spell check are all common features on smartphones today and RIM has spent some time developing its own system to offer an efficient typing experience.

It sees next-word suggestions appear above the character the word begins with, and if it's the word you want to use, you just need to swipe up over the word and it will be added to your sentence.

As with many offerings these days, the keyboard will learn your style of writing, meaning it will be able to suggest better words the more you use your phone.

We found the keyboard to be fairly accurate and relatively well spaced, but for those of you used to the physical buttons of a traditional BlackBerry it will take some getting used to.

Although the operating system is still very much in its early stages of development, we must say that we were impressed with how smooth and slick the interface felt under out fingers – seamlessly zipping around without fuss.

BlackBerry assured us that is smooth experience would still be present in the final product, thanks to the clever integration of the HTML 5 system, which optimises the performance of the software. We certainly hope they're right.

Sony Xperia U review

 The Sony Xperia U is the third of Sony's new wave of Android smartphones, using the same styling as the much larger Xperia S and the slightly largerXperia P.

The Sony Xperia U is the smallest of the three handsets, offering a 3.5-inch TFT display inside the same angular, black case as the Xperia S and Xperia P, and an odd transparent plastic strip acting as part design feature, part information panel and part silly light-up novelty.

Prices are relatively modest for a modern smartphone that says "Sony" on it, with the Xperia U popping up for around £169 on Pay As You Go or £215 SIM-free in the UK, or $340 SIM-free in the US. But can you really get the style of the Xperia S on a budget?

It's pretty close. The Sony Xperia U is small and solid, offering much the same in balance and build quality as last year's excellent Sony Xperia Ray, with Sony putting three capacitive touch buttons beneath the display, indicated by tiny silvery dots.

There's an explanatory icon embedded in the transparent strip, telling Android newcomers these buttons are, from left to right, Back, Home and Menu.

The touch areas are big and very sensitive to presses, meaning it's easy to use the phone without thinking too much about your actions or having to aim your button stabs.

The smaller 3.5-inch display makes the Sony Xperia U fit the hand well, so one-handed use is possible with ease, too.

Above the screen sits the front-facing VGA camera, which can be toggled and selected within the camera app, producing low-res images that emerge from the camera at 640 x 480 resolution.

And if you're even more colour obsessed, the black plastic beneath the see-through strip can be unclipped and replaced with something brighter. White. Or Pink. Or yellow. Which is great, if you're a child.

Given the pattern of Apple's iPhone launches, we're expecting the new iPhone 5 release date to be mid to late 2012.

At Apple's WWDC 2012 event in early June we learnt a lot more about iOS 6, but there was no hardware (well, apart from new Macs). Check out the launch news as well as iOS 6: everything you need to know.

We reported in February that the new iPhone would be launched in October, falling into line with the same release schedule from last year - something backed up by the Verizon CFO.

According to analyst Shaw Wu, the Cupertino firm has reduced the number of iPhone orders by 20%-25% for this quarter ahead of the release.

It seems that Foxconn will again be manufacturing the handset. It'll put the Samsung Galaxy S3 "to shame" according to the CEO of Foxconn, Terry Gou - though he didn't say how.

However, a "Taiwan-based supply chain source" told DigiTimes in early May that Chinese firm Pegatron Technology has the iPhone 5 order ahead of a scheduled September launch.

According to the report Pegatron has also received orders for a 10-inch iPad, which is due to launch at the end of this year - which sounds equally spurious.

This does fit in with a mooted August 7 launch date for the iPhone 5, as is currently being quoted by Know Your Mobile through an 'industry source', but we'll wait to see if that actually comes to pass - and it now seems impossible given that actual manufacturing has yet to begin.

And that seems to be 'backed up' by a report from App4phone.fr that the release date of the iPhone 5 will be September 21... although let's be honest, a Chinese accessory maker with no name to the source being quoted by a previously unknown site when it comes to Apple launches isn't the most reliable of sources.

Update: The latest rumour in the huge mill of new iPhone 5 release dates comes from another unknown source (*sigh*) - which claims we'll see Appletake to the stage on September 12 to show off the next handset, alongside the iPad Mini.

Robot Kecoa iPhone

Bicara robot, akan membawa kita pada cerita-cerita fantasi ala transformer dimana sebagian besar memiliki bentuk serupa manusia. Anda boleh menyimpulkan itu sebagai dua lengan dan dua kaki. Android Wacth Z1, Jam Pintar Multifungsi

Xperia Tipo, Android Sony Paling Terjangkau

Sony Xperia Tipo (GSM Arena) Jakarta - Sony bersiap memasarkan Xperia Tipo di pasar Android Indonesia. Handset Android ini termasuk murah banderolnya, namun diklaim punya beragam keunggulan.

"Xperia Tipo akan menjadi ponsel paling terjangkau harganya dibanding produk ponsel lain yang sudah dikeluarkan Sony," tukas Jovita Pranata, Channel Development & Data Manager Sony Indonesia.

Xperia Tipo coba memberi nilai lebih dibanding para pesaing. Misalnya, di sisi multimedia dimana handset ini dibekali teknologi Xloud untuk memperkeras suara musik tanpa mengorbankan kualitas audio.

Selain itu, Tipo sudah memakai Android 4.0 alias Ice Cream Sandwich. Baterainya yang berkekuatan 1.500 mAh juga diklaim awet, dapat bertahan dalam waktu siaga sekitar 24 jam.

Pengguna Tipo juga akan mendapatkan layanan penyimpanan cloud gratis 50 GB, namun hanya sampai akhir tahun 2013.

Spesifikasi lain Tipo di antaranya kamera 3,2 megapixel, prosesor 800 Mhz, layar 3,2 inch resolusi 320 x 480 pixel, storage internal 2,9 GB serta slot micro SD sampai kapasitas 32 GB.

Dengan harga Rp 1,5 jutaan, Tipo siap dilepas di pasar Tanah Air. Ia akan bersaing dengan handset Android harga terjangkau seperti LG Optimus L3, HTC Explorer atau Samsung Galaxy Y.

Oleh karena itulah, di tengah serbuan piranti-piranti yang bisa merekam video high definition (HD), perusahaan asal Jepang ini masih optimistis dengan merilis 4 camcorder di seri Legria yang menghasilkan video beresolusi 1920 x 1080 p.

Masing-masing piranti yang dimaksud adalah Legria HF R36/HF R38 dan HF M52/HF M56 yang memiliki banderol harga mulai Rp 6-10 juta.

Adapun sejumlah fitur unggulan yang dibekalkan adalah story creator yang menyediakan story board, cinema-look filter yang bisa 'menyulap' tampilan video menjadi lebih dramatis dan touch decoration untuk menambahkan ornamen di video agar terlihat ciamik.

Namun pastinya, fitur-fitur di atas belum optimal bila kualitas video yang dihasilkan kurang memuaskan. Canon pun menjanjikan pembekalan sensor dan prosesor yang baik agar kualitas video dari produk-produknya tidak berujung pada kekecewaan.

Di level yang lebih tinggi, sensor HD CMOS Pro 1/3 inci beresolusi 2.07 MP menjadi penopang inti camcorder seri HF M52/HF M56 yang memiliki harga lebih mahal dibanding dua seri lainnya. Pengaturan diafragma juga disertakan bagi yang gemar dengan efek bokeh.

Di seri HF R36/HF R38, Canon membekalinya dengan resolusi 3,28 MP. Gadget ini memakai lensa yang mampu melakukan pembesaran hingga 32x secara optik. Diklaim, melakukan zoom hingga 51x bisa dilakukan tanpa mengorbankan kualitas.

Untuk prosesor, Canon menempatkan DIGIC DV III. Nah, bagi yang tidak suka fotonya ngeblur karena adanya guncangan, kini sudah bisa bernafas lega sebab adanya fitur Intelligent IS. Seakan tak mau kalah dengan banyaknya kamera yang dibekali fitur WiFi, ke semua piranti camcorder di atas sudah hadir dengan konektivitas tersebut.

Xperia Ion Siap Lawan HTC One X & Galaxy S III

Spesifikasi lain seperti RAM 1GB, storage internal 16GB lengkap dengan slot microSD, konektivitas 4G LTE, baterai 1.900 mAh, NFC, serta sistem operasi Ice Cream Sandwich yang akan bisa diupgrade ke Android Jelly Bean.

Xperia Ion dilepas dengan harga sekitar Rp 5,5 juta. Selain Ion, Sony juga akan segera menghadirkan Xperia Tipo dan Neo L.

Xperia Tipo merupakan handset termurah Sony dengan kisaran harga Rp 1,5 juta. Sedangkan Neo L berada di kelas menengah dengan banderol Rp 2,5 juta.

Spesifikasi Tipo bisa dilihat diihat pada berita sebelumnya. Sedangkan spesifikasi kunci Neo L seperti prosesor 1GHz Snapdragon, RAM 512MB, kamera 5MP dengan LED Flash, baterai 1.500 mAh, layar 4 inch resolusi 480 x 854 pixel serta memori internal 1GB.

HTC-Facebook Phone

HIP.co.id – Facebook dikabarkan telah menjalin kerjasama dengan HTC, produsen ponsel asal Taiwan untuk membuat ponsel yang akan dirilis pertengahan 2013 mendatang. Hal ini disampaikan Bloomberg, Rabu (25/7) kemarin melalui akun Twitter resmi mereka.

Facebook menolak berkomentar lebih lanjut mengenai laporan Bloomberg, dan lebih memilih untuk fokus pada strategi mobile yang lebih luas.

"Strategi mobile kami sederhana: Kami pikir semua perangkat mobile lebih baik jika sangat sosial,” kata perwakilan Facebook Ana Brekalo kepada Cnet. “Kami bekerjasama dengan seluruh industri mobile –dengan operator, pabrik perangkat keras, penyedia OS, dan pengembang aplikasi untuk membuat pengalaman sosial yang lebih kuat kepada lebih banyak orang di seluruh dunia.”

Bermacam rumor dan laporan bahwa Facebook sedang menyiapkan smartphone telah beredar hampir dua tahun belakangan. Facebook membantah laporan pada September 2010 bahwa mereka tengah mengembangkan sistem operasi mobile untuk digunakan pada perangkat keras milik pihak ketiga.

All Things D juga pernah melaporkan bahwa Facebook bekerjasama dengan HTC membuat smartphone dengan platform Android yang diberi kode Buffy. Media yang sama juga mengabarkan bahwa kedua perusahaan itu akan meluncurkan smartphone khusus yang akan dirilis pada kuartal ketiga tahun 2013.

Unlocked Bootloaders Coming Soon on Select HTC Phones
